1.What are the advantages of the Gerard Trap Bar over a conventional barbell?
The unique trapezoidal configuration of The Trap Bar moves the weights closer to the body, thereby improving balance and eliminating interference. This design allows for greater rib cage expansion and muscular development, meaning that when you train with the Trap Bar you gain strength and power in a more efficient, effective, and safe manner.
The Trap Bar will allow complete control, a more upright position and will not interfere with the knees during the lift
The weight will move directly upward instead of sideways which will place more emphasis on the target musculature.
The weight moves directly in line with the ankles which improves leverage and takes stress off the lower back
Shearing forces on spine and knees are reduced. The shrug exercise should be an integral part of every strength athlete’s program. Strong upper back, neck and shoulder muscles are essential in all sports.
The Trap Bar makes “shrugs” more comfortable because there is no bar contact with the upper thighs and lower front torso area; thus, more range of movement yields more muscle use and development
It’s easier to maintain good form — elbow and wrist-joint strain is reduced by eliminating opposite grips, and standing shrugs yield improved trapezius development because the bar never contacts the thighs interfering with range of motion
A Trap Bar moves the weight mass 16% closer to the perpendicular plane of the lower back than a conventional straight bar
2. What kind of exercises can be performed with the Gerard Trap Bar?

4. What is the Gerard Trap Bar made out of?
We constructed the new Gerard Trap Bars from the highest-grade materials because you need equipment built as tough as you are.
To be more specific:
the solid steel we use for the frame is heat treated in order to make sure you can go as heavy as you want without worrying about bending.
The 1″ handles are knurled to a precision diamond pattern which allows a secure grip. The angles are created with a industrial-grade bender and conform exactly with Al Gerard’s original design. The bar ends are milled down to 1.95 inches to make sure that all weight plates will fit (a service that comes at no extra charge.)The bar ends are also chamfered to allow your places to fit on smoothly and easily.
We finished the new Trap Bar off with a water-resistant zinc plating for durability and long-lasting use (which also gives it a very sharp gold finish.) We did NOT use chrome plating which tends to flake off and rust over time or raised handles which are not necessary.
…And just in case you might be wondering, the new Gerard Trap Bar is also proudly manufactured in the United States.

YES! If you are looking for a Trap Bar that will fit Standard plates, then you have come to the right place. You can get yours right here: Standard Trap Bars.

8. What is the diameter of the knurled handles on the Gerard Trap Bar?
For the re-introduction of the Gerard Trap Bar we worked off Al Gerard’s exact plans circa 1987 with his blessing. Al’s original design features a 1″ diameter knurled handle.
Of the tens of thousands of Trap Bars in use, this size has proven to be optimum for many trainees. However, if you would like a Trap Bar with thicker handles or any other custom variations, we can certainly make that happen for you. We can do handle diameters of 1″, 1-3/8″, 2″, 2.5″ and 3″.
Please keep in mind there will be an additional cost for custom handle sizes and as this is a custom order, the the turn around time will take longer. Please contact us with your preferences and we can talk to our manufacturer.

9. How much does the Gerard Trap Bar weigh?
The “Classic” Gerard Trap Bar weighs in at 45 pounds, just like an Olympic Barbell. The “Standard” Gerard Trap Bar weighs 30 pounds and the “XL” Trap Bar weighs 55 pounds.
10. I am 6’5″ and my training partner is 5’3″ – do we need different size Gerard Trap Bars?
Experience has shown that athletes of all sizes can use a Gerard Trap Bar with the current dimensions without any issues whatsoever. However, if you would like to customize the features or dimensions of your Trap Bar we can easily accommodate your needs. Your choices may include: handle diameter, extra loading area for more weight or for power rack use, or a customized width. Our manufacturer is able to address just about any option. Please contact us with your needs and we will see what we can do.
11. Does the Gerard Trap Bar require any maintenance?
All equipment requires a minimum level of care in order to keep it functioning properly. The Gerard Trap Bar is constructed of only the highest grade steel which will not bend even when fully loaded. The Gerard Trap Bar is also zinc-plated which will not peel or flake like the commonly used chrome coating seen in so many other pieces of equipment. The only maintenance that may be required would be to clean the knurling if you frequently use chalk in your workouts — which, of course, depends on your training preferences.
Just like any other piece of equipment, we do not recommend leaving your Trap Bar out in the rain, or using it for any other purpose besides that which it was intended for. As long as you take care of your Trap Bar, it will take care of you.
If you have a custom feature you would like, such as thicker handles, we will be happy to check with our manufacturer to see what we can do. The answer is likely yes, our manufacturer can handle pretty much anything. Please be as specific and descriptive as possible when requesting any custom work. Please be aware, however, that there is a possibility that some custom features for the Gerard Trap Bar may not be possible. In either case, we will do our best to accommodate your needs. If you are ordering a custom bar, please understand that the turn around time will be 12 weeks.
13. Do collars come with the Gerard Trap Bar?
The Gerard Trap Bar does not come with included weight collars however, you will need a good set of collars when you train with one, especially if you train heavy and want to keep the plates secure during use. As a matter of principle, we do NOT recommend those flimsy spring-clip collars that are somewhat popular today. – Nobody who is serious about training would consider those for a second. We have done our research and found the best quality barbell collars available: are the Lock-Jaw brand, which are available for Olympic or standard barbells.
14. What are chamferred bar ends?
On the Trap Bar, you’ll notice that the bar ends are beveled slightly to facilitate loading — this style is known as “chamfered” bar ends; something which makes loading a little easier and which no other company in the industry does.
Another exclusive mark of quality on the Gerard Trap Bar: chamfered bar ends
15. I read on another site that the Gerard Trap Bar doesn’t fit larger athletes – Is this true?
That’s a good question. I asked the same question of Al Gerard, who has trained literally thousands of athletes with the trap bar. His response was that he has never see n an athlete that is “too big” to use the Gerard Trap Bar — and he has seen a lot of them. In fact, Al designed the bar so that an athlete’s size would never be an issue, short of having a 70-inch waist.
Case-in-point, the gentleman on the right: Thomas O’Riordan — or Tommy O. for short. You may have seen him on TV, he was the bailiff on the Judge Hatchett show for several years. Oh yeah, Tommy is 6-feet tall and weighs just south of 300 pounds — Looks like there’s plenty of room to spare so anyone saying the Trap Bar is “too small” has probably never trained with one.
The Gerard Trap Bar fits
athletes of all sizes.
16. How much weight will the Gerard Trap Bar hold?
The answer to this question will depend on the width of your barbell plates. There is approximately 10″ of loading space on each end of the “classic” Gerard Trap Bar and it will easily hold over 500 pounds of normal-sized plates. However, we now have a Trap Bar with approximately 15″ loading areas on each end for some of our super-strong clients. Please click here for more information on the Trap Bar XL.

17. How can I be sure my barbell plates will fit on the Gerard Trap Bar?
We have the bar ends milled down to 1.95″ and they are chamfered both design choices pointedly made so that your all Olympic barbell plates will fit on the Gerard Trap Bar.
Your Olympic plates will look
great on your new Trap Bar
